It was just 7 years ago, when Kurt Heise introduced legislation in Lansing to let violent criminals out of prison early. Yes that is right, Heise who claims that he is a supporter of public safety wanted to let prisoners charged with violent crimes out of prison early.
Thank God a group of bi-partisan leaders in law enforcement stepped up to stop Heise’s reckless actions. This bipartisan group included Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard, former Oakland County Prosecutor Jessica Cooper, Macomb County Sheriff Anthony Wickersham, and former Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette. Together this power group joined forces to stop Heise’s pro-criminal set of bills.
While Wayne County Prosecutor Kim Worthy was not part of this group, she did expressed her displeasure with Heise’s bill to do away with sentencing guidelines that required 2 years in prison for anyone who committed a felony with a firearm. This bill was also stopped in the legislature.
One has to wonder if Heise’s slate of candidates which includes a former Judge would support his soft on crime stance. Read more here: https://www.freep.com/story/news/local/michigan/2015/10/12/officials-slam-bill-automatically-parole-prisoners/73828880/
